UK fishing industry laments 'devastating' impact of fuel prices.

Barry Young, managing director of the fish market in Brixham, a traditional fishing town in Southwest England, offers a stunning figure that, in his view, sums up the current conundrum facing the UK fleet.

Thanks to inflationary pressure on fuel -- made worse by Russia's invasion of Ukraine -- the larger 20-meter beam trawlers that operate out of the port, are paying upwards of £24,000 (€27,000/$27,000) for a week’s fuel.

That figure is around double what they were paying last year, and for a sector that operates on already thin margins, it's having "a devastating effect."
